What are the Different Uses of the Verb ‘’hramel’’ in Armenian

In Armenian the verb ‘’hramel’’ is used to show respect to others and in general it is used in direct speech, by conjugating the verb in to հրամէ՛ or հրամեցէ՛ք .

This verb is used in different ways.

  1. When we welcome guests into our house, we say. Բարի եկաք, հրամեցէ՛ք։

which means come inside, welcome.

  1. while eating.

- հրամեցէ՛ք, ճաշը կը պաղի։ which means help yourselves before the meal gets cold.

  1. a. When we agree to someone else’s request. -Գրիչդ կու տա՞ս։

- Սիրով, հրամէ՛։ 

In this situation ‘’hrame’’ is used instead of saying  ‘’take it’’.

3.b. Similarly, if we want to show proof of something.

- Ապացոյց կ՚ուզե՞ս, հրամէ՛։

You want evidence, please be my guest.

  1. If we cannot  hear what another person is saying, instead of saying ‘’I didn’t hear you. Can you  please repeat it ’’. We use ‘’hrame’’ with a question mark on it. 

- հրամէ՞։

So, s/he repeats it.

 As we see, this magical verb ‘’hramel’’ has many different implications.
