The Use of the Question Mark in the Armenian Language.

Unlike in English where you have to put the question mark absolutely at the end of the sentence, in Armenian you can put the mark above the word which you need to stress. 

 In the simple sentence such as 

Յակոբը դպրոց գնաց։ 

Hagop went to school.

You can put the mark on many different words according to your intention. 

So, if I want to emphasize the person who is Hagop in this sentence, I ask:

-Յակո՞բը դպրոց գնաց։

Did Hagop go to school?

And the answer I expect is either “Yes, Hagop did.” or “No, another person did.”

So, Այո՛, Յակոբը դպրոց գնաց։ 

Yes, Hagop went to school.

Or

-Ո՛չ, Յակոբը չգնաց, Արամը գնաց։ No, Hagop didn’t go. Aram went.

If I want to emphasize on the place which is դպրոց, school in this case, I put the question mark on the word school itself. 

-Յակոբը դպրո՞ց գնաց։ 

Did Hagop go to school?

The answer I expect is related to the place.

-Այո՛, դպրոց գնաց։ Yes, he went to school.

-Ո՛չ, ակումբ գնաց։ No, he went to a club.

If I want to emphasize the action (verb) which is գնաց, went in this case, I put the mark on the verb.

So:

-Յակոբը դպրոց գնա՞ց։

Did Hagop go to school? 

The answer which I expect is related to the action.

-Այո՛, գնաց։ Yes, he went.

-Ո՛չ, չգնաց, դեռ կը քնանայ։ No, he didn’t. He is still sleeping. 

As we see, in Armenian we do not put the mark at the end of the sentence, but we put it on the word that we need answered. 

We place the question mark on the last vowel of the stressed word.
